Ballers HFA Are Contenders Now, Even With the Bruises
Ballers HFA’s season has had two results that would normally derail a title push. The loss to AC Juniors showed how thin the margin is against the league’s best, and the 6 to 0 collapse against Vinotinto was the type of night that can shake a locker room. But what’s happened since is the real story.
Ballers did not fold. They responded like a team with championship depth, and the numbers back it up.
Right now Ballers sit 5th in the table with 12 points from 7 matches, a record of 4 wins and 3 losses, 19 goals scored, 21 conceded, and a goal difference of minus 2. The important context is at the top: Houston Lions lead on 14 points, so Ballers are only 2 points off first place, and they are tied on points with AC Juniors, Houston FC, Little United FC, and sitting right in the title pack.
That’s the standings side of it. The “contender” side is how Ballers are getting their points, and who is driving it.
The signings turned Ballers into a multi threat team
Ballers have two things every championship team needs: a true finisher, and a true creator.
Ronald Aguilar is currently leading the scoring for Ballers with 6 goals. That’s the kind of output that flips close matches and makes teams defend deeper.
Rene Tello is doing the more dangerous part. He leads Ballers in assists with 6, and he’s also scoring, with 4 goals. That’s 10 goal contributions from one player, which is the profile of a title level engine.
Then the depth kicks in. Henry Dubon has 3 goals. Angel Landaverde has 3 goals and 1 assist. Sergio Gutierrez has 1 goal and 2 assists. On the assists side, Ballers also have contributions coming from Manuel Martinez with 2, plus Victor Uzoaru, Anthony Herrera, Jon Paul Vargas, and Mario Ghiorosi all adding 1 each. When your goals and assists are spread across this many players, you stop being easy to game plan against.
The results show the growth, not just the talent
Ballers’ full run so far tells a clear story: the team has been tested, then recalibrated, then started stacking wins.
On October 26 they lost away to Houston FC, 3 to 2.
On November 2 came the statement win: Ballers beat Ghosttown Saints FC 1 to 0. Ghosttown are one of the favorites to win the championship this season, and this is the kind of match that separates “good team” from “real contender.” It was tight, low margin, and Ballers proved they can win the type of game you see in playoffs.
On November 15 was the setback everyone remembers, the 6 to 0 loss away to Vinotinto.
But Ballers answered it with results. On November 22 they beat University of Houston 5 to 3. On December 7 they lost away to AC Juniors 4 to 3, a one goal match against another title level side. On December 13 they beat Little United FC 3 to 2. Then on January 17 they got a huge away win at Houston United FC, 5 to 3.
That’s the contender pattern: they can win ugly, they can win open games, and they have enough production across the squad to keep climbing even when the season throws a punch.
This weekend is a six pointer in the middle of the title race
Matchday 9 is set up to reshape the table, because multiple contenders are playing each other while Ballers have a direct battle with a team right behind them.

Ballers vs Houstonians FC is the key one for Ballers because it’s a direct points swing inside the title pack. If Ballers take care of business, they keep pace at the top and put pressure on the teams above them who are also in tough matchups.
