This season’s opening weekend is upon us, and with seven new teams ready to make a statement, this campaign will probably be the most competitive one in league history. Will one of the usual suspects lift the trophy, or will a group of underdogs prevail? For one weekend, everyone is tied for first in the standings, and anything can and will happen.
Note: postponed games are due to delays in fulfilling late uniform orders
Game 1- Fuego SL vs SCA Rayados (Dec. 7, 6 pm)
Fuego SL (formally known as Green Flag FC) will debut their new branding on opening day against SCA Rayados, a team with experience playing in the UPSL, considered to be the unofficial fourth tier of soccer in the United States. Only time will tell if this experience will pay off for them.
Game 2- AC Juniors vs Dynasty FC (Dec. 7, 6 pm)
The 23/24 winners AC Juniors will face off against the new kids in town, Dynasty Football Club. This will be a perfect opportunity for DFC to test how they will match up to the level of Volt League. For AC Juniors, the road to their second consecutive championship will begin.
Game 3- MAFC vs Houston United FC (POSTPONED)
MAFC, last season’s runner ups, will face off against yet another new Volt League team, Houston United FC. HUFC won the Spring 2024 Crossbar Academy League and will surely introduce a competitive squad against the perennial Volt League contenders.
Game 4- Little United FC vs La Vinotinto Houston FC (POSTPONED)
Two teams that featured in the 2024 Houston Super Cup will make their Volt League debuts against each other. Little United made it to the final of the Super Cup while La Vinotinto failed to make it out of their group; it’ll be interesting to see what has changed since the tournament for both teams, both on the tactical side and on the personnel side.
Game 5- Ghosttown Saints FC vs. Longhorn FC (POSTPONED)
Longhorn FC will have a difficult test against Ghosttown Saints FC, another one of the top dogs in the league. Longhorn FC had an impressive campaign in Volt League 2 and will need more of the same if they want to have a chance against the Saints.
Game 6- University of Houston vs Houstonians FC (POSTPONED)
The last game of opening fixtures will have the University of Houston face off against Houstonians FC, a team with a proven track record of developing youth players, an example being former Houston Dynamo player Memo Rodriguez. This is shaping up to be the closest match in terms of talent of all the opening matches
