With just three matchdays remaining, Houston United and the University of Houston have officially clinched their promotion, earning an impressive 31 points from 13 games. While the season isn't over and the championship title is still up for grabs, no other clubs can mathematically surpass these two teams in the standings.
The only club that could potentially catch up is MAFC Academy, currently sitting at 25 points with four games left. However, due to league rules, a club cannot have two teams competing in the same division. Since MAFC's first team is already in Division 1, this regulation clears the way for Houston United and the University of Houston to achieve their promotion goals.
But the excitement doesn’t end there. The battle for the championship is still ongoing, and with a restructuring of Division 1, there’s an additional promotion spot up for grabs. Here’s how it works:
Option 1: Win the Division 2 Championship For those new to Volt League, the season doesn’t end with the regular matchdays. The ultimate champion is crowned through knockout stages, or playoffs. Winning the Division 2 Championship secures promotion.
Option 2: Promotion Playoff Match If a team other than MAFC Academy or the officially promoted clubs wins the Division 2 Championship, the final promotion spot will be decided through a playoff match. This match will feature the 4th and 5th placed teams fighting for the last available spot in Division 1, should they not already secure promotion through the championship.
In the coming weeks, we’ll see the thrilling conclusion of Division 2 and the beginning of an exciting new league format kicking off this October. Stay tuned for more updates and get ready for an exhilarating end to the season!
